But taken as a complete package, the GLI is a joy, with excellent driving dynamics and hardware, plus plenty of Germanic cachet — even if this car is made specifically for North America. The Jetta is a compact sedan that pushes at the boundaries, offering passenger and cargo space close to some midsize sedans. This brings heated seats, trip computer, rearview camera, dual-zone climate control, self-dimming rearview mirror, cooled storage compartment, sunroof and inch alloy wheels.
The DSG transmission comes as standard here, along with things like heated windshield washer nozzles, navigation, parking sensors, blind spot monitoring and rear traffic alert. The Jetta has been re-styled ever so slightly for the model year. The grille is more shallow and the headlamps are a different shape.
If the car might be considered character-free, then the newest version at least seems to have some edge to it. The rear end displays a new trunk lid, tail lights, and bumper. The Hybrid, meanwhile, has its own more aerodynamic style of alloy wheels. This mild range revamp has also resulted in a rise in quality for the cabin materials. This all seems appropriate to a dashboard design that remains firmly in the conservative camp — nothing frivolous or fanciful, just straightforward functionality.
But certainly pleasant as well. As mentioned earlier, the Jetta offers plenty of space for people and paraphernalia alike — more than most other compact cars. That said, the seats in the TDI and the Hybrid are similar, since all three cars are more than capable of involvement while simultaneously being good choices for long trips.
This failing is especially noticeable because the armrests in the doors are great. The Hybrid takes a bit of a hit — Try and spring for the adaptive lighting. On dark, twisting mountain roads, they really do come into their own as they illuminate the next corner.
That extra fraction of a second could mean all the difference between hitting a deer or getting home unscathed. The high-end audio system option is Fender-branded and produced by Panasonic. For anyone who has never heard of Jimi Hendrix or even John Mayer, Fender is an iconic electric guitar maker. A few years back, the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety IIHS added a new challenge called the small overlap test where just the front corner of a car is hit which might still lead to occupant injury.
Naturally, there are all the mandatory safety features such as ABS and traction control, plus six airbags and more advanced stuff like electronic brake force distribution. The GLI enjoys a turbocharged 2.The Volkswagen Jetta is a spaciously-sized compact sedan with just enough German personality to favorably differentiate it from the economy-car pack. Because the Jetta's last redesign a few years back was met with underwhelming response, Volkswagen has been industriously reestablishing the Jetta as an aspirational choice for buyers in the compact-car market.
In an attempt to earn back its former glory, the Jetta's exterior gets a mild restyling for a sleeker look, an upgraded cabin and, on the TDI version, a more powerful and fuel efficient diesel engine. The Jetta also boasts a new suite of available electronic driver aids that includes blind-spot detection, forward-collision alert and parking sensors.

While only available on certain trims and certainly not exclusive in the compact car segment, they do endow the Jetta with some of the same features that not long ago were available only for larger and more expensive cars.
Other Jetta advantages are still intact, such as a spacious cabin that's tastefully designed, the availability of both hybrid and diesel-powered engines and excellent crash test safety scores. We also like the popular turbocharged 1. There are some tradeoffs with the Jetta you should consider.
The base 2. We're also not very fond of the stiffer ride that comes with the available sport-tuned suspension. Overall, however, there are more positives than negatives here, and the previous Jetta earned an Edmunds.
Still, the compact car segment is awash with solid choices. We think the Ford Focus and the Mazda 3 are more entertaining to drive than the VW, and their cabins are generally richer. Both the Hyundai Elantra and its Kia Forte cousin are well built, boast plenty features and provide strong value.
Then there's the Honda Civicwhich still might be the segment's overall standard. Given this abundance of good picks, we suggest doing your research and planning back-to-back test drives before making your decision.

By this time, production had gone past the one million mark. By the s and 70s, the Beetle had become a household name, thanks to its reputation for durability and dependability.
Unlike other cars, the Volkswagen needed very little maintenance and could be counted on for the long haul. At the end ofthe Volkswagen had overtaken the Ford Model T and sold more than 15 million units. The experience and expertise of the two firms allowed Volkswagen to expand operations and implement technological innovations in the car, such as water cooled engines and front wheel drive.
Following the success of the Beetle, Volkswagen scored another hit with the Passat in The Passat, which was inspired by the Audi 80, became a huge hit as was the Volkswagen Golf, which was known as the Rabbit in the United States. The Rabbit was also popular in Canada and became known as the hatchback for families, and two years later inVolkswagen introduced the Polo, which was designed after the Audi By the s, Volkswagen began focusing on product expansion, and saw the release of the 6 th generation VW Golf.
Three years earlier inthe fifth-generation Jetta and the sixth-generation Passat made their debut to critical acclaim, and VW announced that the company was intent on bringing back the Scirocco too.
Apart from producing quality cars, the company is also focused on developing eco-friendly engines, and as proof of their commitment, VW recently opened a solar plant in Tennessee in the US.

Compact sport sedan options for normal folks have been dwindling. Nowadays, plenty of swift small sedans are still on sale, but many have been priced out of feasibility for average middle-class car buyers.
Hey, Volkswagenshall we make it four? The new seventh-generation Jetta impressed us when we drove it last summerbut we knew it was leaving room for improvement at the test track. That's where the Jetta GLI comes in. In place of the standard car's hp 1. Unlike its slightly neutered predecessorsthis GLI's engine makes the same hp and lb-ft as it does in the GTI. Both figures best those of the Civic and Elantra, and the torque number matches the more expensive Subaru. Front brakes are sourced from the hottest VWthe Golf R, and the regular Jetta's torsion beam rear suspension is swapped out for a more sophisticated and better controlled multilink setup.
It also sits 0. An electronically controlled front differential varies the torque split under hard cornering to help control understeer and improve turn-in. A quick-shifting automated dual-clutch transmission replaces the standard Jetta's conventional automatic. This GLI has some very legitimate performance hardware, but that doesn't matter unless it results in legitimate performance benefits.
With the help of all that go-fast hardware, the GLI completes the sprint in just 6. The result is also 0. The Hyundai is 0. Models equipped with the dual-clutch transmission like our tester have standard launch control, yet road test editor Chris Walton was still met with traction control and stability control intervention, even with both systems supposedly disabled.
For the record, the GLI is also available with a six-speed manual, but the gearing is longer, and we found awkward pedal spacing for heel-toe downshifts in the three-pedal Golf R. At least in the case of the GLI, dual-clutch is the move. In our figure-eight test, which gives us an idea of a car's acceleration, braking, and limit handling characteristics, the GLI recorded a very respectable The figure-eight number is also ahead of the Honda and Hyundai, but the WRX's traction and power advantages give it a slight edge.
Walton observed largely neutral handling in the GLI with admirable levels of grip and a firm, consistent brake pedal. Our test car's optional summer tires surely contributed to the results. The allegedly disabled traction and stability control systems did continue to mar the figure-eight experience, cutting power midcorner and only delivering maximum torque once the wheels were pointed straight again. This page is for personal, non-commercial use.

Both VW's boast a potent hp turbocharged four-cylinder that mates to either an engaging manual transmission or a quicker-shifting automatic. The sedan's aesthetic is more sedated than its hot-hatch sibling, but at least it sells at a discounted price, as the GLI costs thousands less than the GTI.
Still, these two Vee-Dubs are equally entertaining whether they're looping racetracks or racing down back roads. Simply put, the Jetta GLI is compact-sedan greatness. Apart from a small increase in price for both trim levels, the Jetta GLI enters the model year without any significant alterations.
In addition to exclusive features such as adaptive dampers and wireless charging, every Autobahn has an enhanced audio system, fully digital gauge cluster, larger touchscreen, leather upholstery, panoramic sunroof, and ventilated front seats. All that equipment really improves the sedan's appeal, and none of it is available on the base model.
A six-speed manual transmission is standard, and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic is optional. Regardless of transmission, acceleration is significantly improved compared with the standard Jetta's hp engine. In our testingthe automatic was slightly quicker to 60 mph. The stick-shift version was easy to row; our only complaint with the automatic was its hesistance to downshift during spirited cornering.
Speaking of corners, the GLI's specially tuned suspension and sticky summer tires a no-cost option proved this Jetta is just as athletic as its hatchback equivalent.
Likewise, the Jetta GLI provides feelsome steering, strong brakes, and a compliant ride whether it's on the standard shocks or the adaptive dampers that are reserved for the top-tier Autobahn model.
The standard six-speed manual transmission is estimated to earn 25 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway. Models equipped with the optional seven-speed automatic can expect to see 25 mpg city and 32 mpg highway, according to the EPA. We tested a GLI with each gearbox on our mile fuel-economy test route and both achieved an impressive 36 mpg on the highway.
While the GLI has the same basic roomy cabin as the standard Jetta, a few bits of red trim spice things up somewhat. Even the base S model has features such customizable ambient interior lighting, dual-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats, and passive entry with push-button start.
The snazzier Autobahn version adds a The sportiest Jetta is also more spacious than its hatchback counterpart, with about two inches of extra legroom in the back seat. Likewise, the compact sedan has a massive trunk that managed to hold more carry-on bags seven total than the five we fit behind the Golf's rear seat. With either a 6. The Autobahn model gets the larger screen along with a watt, eight-speaker BeatsAudio sound system and wireless charging.
While the GLI doesn't have all the modern driver-assistance technologyit does boast more standard equipment than direct rivals. Key safety features include:. Volkswagen has an above-average limited warranty and below-average powertrain coverage. To offset the latter, the company provides some complimentary maintenance.
